Johnny Comes Marching Home

A very old song that everybody knows, this has had hundreds of different words added to it including ‘The elephants went in two by two’ and so on. The rhythm is 6/8 or Irish Jig style. Look closely at my left hand and you can see I’m ‘damping’ the notes to give a more percussive sound. I’m doing this by lifting the left hand finger off the fret early, to deaden the note. This song is interesting because we’re using the same simple left hand positions as all the other songs, but we’re playing in A minor instead of G major.
